Are Far Infrared Saunas Safe? Don’t They Burn?
I’ve seen the question often, are infrared saunas safe? Isn’t it dangerous?
Infrared wavelength light, which is what is used in infrared saunas, is part of the spectrum of sunlight. It is there whenever you step out into the sun, and helps the suns rays warm you.
FIR saunas, or Far Infrared Saunas, utilize the same wavelength light that is the far infrared component of sunlight. And it’s not just infrared saunas that do that, infrared light has been used in some form or other for quite some time. For example it is used in hospitals in humidicribs for newborn babies as a safe form of heating for them.
And has been used, and is still used, in heat lamps, like those used on sports injuries, for example. FIR saunas are not the first to use infrared wavelengths for heating, it’s been around for quite some time.
And in some respects FIR saunas are safer than regular Finnish or rock, or steam saunas. They operate at lower temperatures than steam saunas. Steam saunas can operate at temperatures at or above 200 degrees, and this is not recommended for some people with particular health problems, like high blood pressure.
Some people have suggested that far infrared saunas are not safe because sunlight, or at least overexposure to sunlight, has been shown to cause skin cancer. However it is the Ultra Violet component of sunlight that burns and thereby causes skin cancer, not the infrared portion of the spectrum.
So rest assured, your infra red sauna is as safe, or safer, than a traditional steam sauna. Relax and enjoy it.
